Video | Chanel and the Diamond

Gabrielle Chanel is well known for her love of pearls and gold chains with leather laces intertwined.
But there was a time when diamonds were Chanel's icon...

This third instalment of Inside Chanel, a collection of videos about the famous brand, (the first 2 are about their other icon, the Chanel No. 5 Perfume, which took over the world by storm with Marilyn Monroe fronting the campaign, these can be found here) titled "Chanel and the Diamond".

This video takes us all the way back to 1932, when Chanel crafted her capsule collection of jewellery and accessories entirely from diamonds, all of which were inspired by the crosses, stars and moons in her childhood orphanage. The idea was to change people's perception of jewellery, to turn the traditional symbol of jewels, which were once "trophies given by admirers", into "symbols of liberty".  By creating a setting which could sit perfectly without clasps and hooks, Chanel brought forth an innovation in the jewels industry, making "fluidity a principle and liberty a virtue".

Watch the story of "Chanel and the Diamond" unfold below.
