Denim: The Common Thread this Summer

So F&F have made the groundbreaking discovery that British ladies pack an average of 28 different outfits for a week-long holiday. The female nation and the suitcase industry have both been aware of this fact for years!

Travel agents, like Thomas Cook, have seen a surge in bookings to popular hot-spots like Spain and Greece in recent weeks as the Met Office confirmed that it has been the wettest June on record, sadly no surprise to the wellie-wearing festival goers.

And with thoughts turning to swapping the floods for sun-drenched pool you actually would want to take a dip in, an interesting titbit cropped up from this recent research. Fashion-savvy holidaymakers swap outfits an amazing four times a day whilst away. Now unless you’re in practice to be the next Kim Kardashian, surely all of these wardrobe changes are eating away at valuable sunbathing time – not to mention cocktail hour?

So this summer, why not take a stand against the downpours and take it back to basics? 2012 is all about denim, denim and more denim. We’ve even got denim ON denim. This fashion heavyweight works harder than any other material and can be paired with pretty much everything else in your wardrobe, helping to take the strain off your bulging suitcase.

Here are some of my favourite ways to rock the denim-clad look this summer:

 Who Wears Short Shorts?

Last weekend’s Wireless festival may have turned Hyde Park into a mud bath, but that didn’t stop the female contingent from pulling on their favourite denim shorts. A classic pair of jean cut-offs just screams summer, come rain or shine. Beat the cold and team with an oversized leather jacket to add an edge to this wardrobe staple.

Double Denim

Once the biggest faux pas around, double denim is now a marriage made in fashion heaven. Karl Lagerfield’s rock-Marie Antoinette collection for Chanel Cruise threw double denim into the mix with knickerbockers and full skirts in sugary pastel colours. Create your own summer spin by pairing a light-wash Western shirt with a darker denim skirt.

Go Psychedelic

Neon is blazing the style trail this summer. Turn up the colour temperature this summer with a pair of jeans in hot pink, yellow, orange and even green. Take a leaf out of Michelle Williams’ book and pair it with a tuxedo jacket for a look that will take you straight from the airport to the cocktail bar.

Floral Fever

She may be to unable to crack a smile, but there’s no doubting Kirsten Stewart’s style credentials these days. Her recent choice of a wild pair of floral printed jeans from Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere with a simple white top is a far cry from the yawn-inducing Bella Swan. Grab your own pair of floral printed jeans for a statement summer look that’s guaranteed to get you noticed.
